Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Is summer training mandatory?

No. However, it is strongly encouraged as the volleyball program at Bishop Chatard is very competitive. Not only does training help prepare us for the upcoming season, it also helps us get a much better idea of talent, potential, and dedication. Once tryouts roll around in August, we will evaluate potential players during the tryout but will also consider the body of work from the summer.

What if I haven’t played club volleyball or volleyball at all? Can I still participate in summer training and tryouts?

You can absolutely still join us, no matter your volleyball history. We encourage it! There have been several athletes over the years with little to no volleyball experience who ended up being an integral part of the program. It’s all about your potential, work ethic, attitude, and needs of the program.

What if I can’t make it to some or all of the summer training? Can I still tryout?

While we strongly encourage that every athlete make it to every possible volleyball event throughout the summer, we do understand that things come up. In the event that you can’t make it, we ask that you let the coaching staff know in advance so that we can plan accordingly.

Are there any breaks during the summer?

Yes! There are two moratoriums each summer.

During this time, there will be no volleyball or any other athletic practice or event. We recommend that you plan your vacations during these dates, if you have the flexibility to do so.

When do tryouts begin?

See Team Calendar for details

How many athletes make each team?

We will have a Freshman, JV, and Varsity team. The amount we keep on each team varies based on the needs of the program. Twelve is what we generally strive for, but if we use 2019 as an example, the Freshman and JV teams had 13 players and the Varsity had 15.

Should I be doing anything right now?

Yes. Anyone planning on participating in summer training and trying out for the volleyball program should be staying healthy, working out, and getting reps with a ball even if it is at home. Ideally, this would be done all year long. Participating in club volleyball or other sports is a great way to stay active.

Should I play club volleyball during the off-season?

Though it is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged, as the program is competitive. There are several clubs in the area, so speak with our volleyball staff with any questions you may have in regards to playing club.
